The Initial Award gives the learner an understanding of the theory and practice of the initial verification and commissioning of both single and three phase electrical installations.


The qualification follows BS 7671 and the industry recognised IET Guidance Note 3, as well as the Electrical Safely Council’s Best Practice Guides.

The Award gives an opportunity for individuals to develop and/or enhance their knowledge and skills in the inspection and testing of single and three phase low voltage electrical installations.

It should be noted that this EAL qualifications is equivalent to the City and Guilds 2394 qualification. The main key difference from the delegates point of view is:

These is no written examination as this is conducted as an online "test" and crucially is an open-book examination, however the practical assessments are exactlky the same as City and Guilds 2394.

The Periodic Award gives an opportunity for individuals to develop and/or enhance their knowledge and skills in the periodic inspection and testing of single and three phase low voltage electrical installations.

This qualification is for experienced electricians who wish to carry out the inspection, testing and commissioning of electrical installations and would like to obtain a nationally recognised accreditation and certificate and is particulary suited for those individiuals who wish to acquire the knowledge and skills associated with Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations & electricians who wish to carry out the periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations and issue Electrical Installation Condition Reports and for those who wish to acquire new knowledge and skills.

The application of knowledge involved with the periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations. It has one unit, covering safe isolation, condition reporting requirements, periodic inspection and testing, interpreting test results and certification.

  • The requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations for the safe inspection of electrical systems and equipment

  • Appropriate procedures for completing safe isolation

  • Health and Safety requirements which apply when inspecting, testing and commissioning electrical installations and circuits                                                                                                                                                                          

  • The purpose of periodic inspection of electrical installations

  • The requirements of the periodic inspection

  • Documents associated with the inspection and testing and condition reporting of an electrical installation

  • The required information that the inspector needs to conduct the periodic inspection of an electrical installation

There is one online examination comprising of 55 mulitple choice and selected questions - the examination is open book - Initial Verification

There is 4 separate practical assessments which comprise of the following:

Inspection

Installation

Earth Fault Loop Impedance

and a 2 1/2 Hour Practical

The Periodic assessment involves 1 on screen open book exams consisting of 35 questions each lasting 60 minutes  and a 2 1/2 Hour practical assessment covering periodic inspection and testing.

Important Information

As these courses deal with the application of knowledge involved with the inspection and testing of electrical installations, it is anticipated that candidates who wish to undertake these courses should have some electrical experience in inspection and testing of electrical installations; preferably participation in the process of initial verification and/or periodic inspection and testing.
